
The Language Centre offers Interfaculty electives courses which are open to students from the following faculties: Architecture, Dentistry, Education, Engineering, Law and Medicine. these courses are part of the broadening courses offered to University students so that they can expand their knowledge in different areas but at the same time obtaining credits for them.

LANG1016
Spanish for Beginners (6 credits) First semester only
The aim of this course is to teach complete beginners the basics of the Spanish language. Through a communicative approach, students will learn how to interact in everyday situations such as introducing themselves, asking for directions, buying things, ordering food and drink, etc. There will be an emphasis on speaking, listening, reading and writing skills with many exercises and practice to enhance the students' ability to speak and understand basic Spanish.

LANG1020
Spanish for Beginners (6 credits) Second semester only
This course is a continuation of LANG1016.
Prerequisites
Students must have satisfactory completed LANG1016 or provide evidence that they have attained a comparable level elsewhere.

LANG2018
Intermediate Spanish- Part I (6 credits) First semester only
This course is a continuation of the first year beginner course in Spanish. The intention is to build further on this initial work and widen the scope of exposure to more complex aspects of the language. The teaching will be diversified through the use of more elaborate material and other techniques such as video. Participants are expected to consolidate their understanding of Spanish, and develop their production and reception skills.
Prerequisites
-Students wishing to be admitted to LANG2018 will be required to have successfully completed LANG1020 as well as an intensive course (Transition 1) usually held in June and/or September.
-Students wishing to be admitted to LANG2018 without having completed the above prerequisites will be required to satisfy the Faculty Board through the Director of the Language Centre that they have attained elsewhere the required standard.
LANG2019
Intermediate Spanish- Part II (6 credits) Second semester only
This course is a continuation of LANG2018.
Prerequisites
-Students wishing to be admitted to LANG2019 will be required to have successfully completed LANG2018.

LANG3020
Advanced Spanish-Part I (6 credits) First semester only
This course continues to build on the previous years' work on a more advanced level. The intention is to lead participants towards a fairly comprehensive understanding of the Spanish language features through the study of a variety of documents (written, audio and video). The selection of documents will also serve as a basic for discussion on some social issues regarding contemporary Spain, as well as her history and cultural background.
Prerequisites
-Students wishing to be admitted to LANG3020 will be required to have successfully completed LANG2019 as well as an intensive course (Transition 2) usually held in June.
-Students wishing t be admitted to LANG3020 without completed the above prerequisites will be required to satisfy the Faculty board through the Director of the Language Centre that they have attained the required standard.

Advanced Spanish-Part II (6 credits) Second semester only

Introduction to Spanish Culture (3 credits) First semester only
This course aims to give students an insight into Spanish culture and traditions. Students will learn about aspects of the traditions, history, art, music and customs of all Spanish speaking countries. Guest speakers (all from different Spanish speaking countries) will give talks about interesing aspects of their culture and there will be discussions about all subjects presented in the course.

100% Coursework. Coursework may include the following: (i) periodic assigments; (ii) projects; and (iii) other coursework as prescribed.
Medium of instruction
English. Knowledge of Spanish is not necessary.
LANG0005
Introduction to Spanish and Spanish American Literature (3 credits) Second semester only. The course will introduce students to the basics of Spanish and Spanish-American Literature.
The course objectives will be tackled in three ways: a) presenting a brief history of Spanish and Spanish American Literature, illustrated with a selection of texts from key readings of different literary genres, which will be read and commented; b) with a focus on Literature as representation of high and popular Hispanic culture; and c) by very brief explorations into the similarities and differences between Spanish and Hispanic Literature and other Literatures.
The medium of instruction is English. Knowledge of Spanish is not necessary.
