EL IMPERATIVO AFIRMATIVO

THE AFFIRAMATIVE IMPERATIVE

The imperative form uses basically 4 forms:

- 2nd person singular and plural (Tú - Vosotros)

INFORMAL
- 3rd person singular and plural (Usted - Ustedes)

FORMAL

THE FORM "TÚ"

The "tú " form of the imperative affirmative is very simple. It is just like the 3rd person singular of the present tense. Examples:

CORRER corre
ESTUDIAR

estudia

PEDIR

pide

There are 8 exceptions:

PONER pon
SER
DECIR di
IR

ve

HACER

haz

TENER ten
SALIR

sal

VENIR

ven

THE FORM "VOSOTROS/AS"

Simply substitute the "r" ending of the infinitive for a "d"

CORRER

corred

ESTUDIAR

estudiad

PEDIR

pedid

There are no exceptions

THE FORM "USTED/USTEDES"

These forms are also simple. Just substitute the thematic vowel ("A" for verbs ending in "AR" and "E" for verbs ending in "ER" and "IR" for the opposite thematic vowel, that is, "A" à "E" and "E" à "A"

Example:

ESTUDIAR PRESENTE IMPERATIVO
usted estudia estudie
ustedes estudian estudien

CORRER PRESENTE

IMPERATIVO

usted corre corra
ustedes corren corran

VIVIR PRESENTE IMPERATIVO
usted vive viva
ustedes viven vivan

THE IMPERATIVE AND OBJECT PRONOUNS

With all forms of the imperative, object pronouns are placed at the end of the verb attached to it.

Examples:

déjalo

(leave it)

búscala

(find her)

When we have 2 object pronouns, the IO goes first and the DO second.

Example:

Da el libro a Juan Dáselo

THE IMPERATIVE AND REFLEXIVE VERBS

When we have a reflexive verb in the imperative affirmative form we attach the reflexive pronoun at the end of the verb.

Examples:

Levántate

(you get up)

Levántese

(you [formal] get up)
